Charles L. Hughes

Charles4bCharles L. Hughes is the Director of the Memphis Center at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. His work on race, popular culture and the South has been published widely.

His acclaimed first book, Country Soul: Making Music and Making Race in the American South, was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2015.

He is currently at work on a book about African Americans and professional wrestling in the United States, and published “‘Tell Them It’s What Their Grandfathers Got’: Racial Violence in Southern Professional Wrestling” in the edited collection Performance and Professional Wrestling (Routledge, 2016).
