10:15-10:35: “The Work, The Shoot, The Worked Shoot: Wrestling, documentary, and the production of the real”:

Ryan J. Cox teaches English, Film and Cultural Studies at Keyano College in Alberta, Canada.

Though its outcomes are predetermined, professional wrestling produces a number overlapping realities. These realities are accessed based on where the observer sits in the web of watching and watched, and smart and innocent. This resembles the documentary whose truth claims rest on the presentation of things as they happened, but whose representation of the real is highly determined. The documentary real is shaped by the position of the observer or camera, and the documentarian’s subjective understanding of what is being recorded. Through an understanding of how the documentary produces a reality, the overlapping realities of wrestling become comprehensible.
